About Us

AUTOMAT Collective is a curatorial collective based in Philadelphia championing emerging artists through exhibitions, programming, and publications. We are created by and for artists: It is our mission to support the developing trajectories of emerging artists and to provide a space where artists and curators can undertake experimental projects that advance the dialogue of our visual culture. In addition to our regular programming, we are proud to partner with other collectives and community organizations for collaborative engagement.

Danielle Degon Rhodes

is a multimedia artist and curator. She graduated with a BFA in Sculpture from Tyler School of Art and Architecture in 2017. Since, she has completed residencies at the Salzburg International Academy of Fine Art in Austria and at Tai Kwun Contemporary in Hong Kong.

Through her studio and curatorial practices, she explores her interest in labor and material extraction in search of artist-made alternatives.

Gladney Hall

is a Midwest born artist, designer, and curator located in Philadelphia. She received her BA in graphic design from the Corcoran Design in 2021. After university, she went on to complete a fine art residency program at the Berlin Art Institute and then move her studio into South Philadelphia. Her works focus on transitory spaces between the mythological and real: the unexplored and forgotten stories humans use to entertain, question, and strengthen their lives.

Brynn Hurlstone

is a transdisciplinary artist, educator, and fabricator who creates consumptive, sensorial objects and environments that invite engagement. She considers trauma and its relationship to precarity, unspeakability, isolation, connection, and release by allowing material reactivity and subjective experience to speak reciprocally through her work. Hurlston is the owner of Second Generation Glassworks, the co-founder of the Glass Impact nonprofit coalition, and the former Director of Operations of Public Glass in San Francisco. She received a BFA from Bowling Green State University and an MFA from Tyler School of Art and Architecture, where she is an Adjunct Assistant Professor. She has participated in numerous exhibitions, including 5into1 at Moore College of Art and Design, Art of the State 2023 at the State Museum of Pennsylvania, and the recent national exhibition Through a Glass Darkly at Delaware Contemporary Museum, which was hailed as the “new guard of glassmakers” in the Spring 2023 issue of Glass Magazine.

Zoe McCarthy

is a mixed reality artist from the DC area residing in Philadelphia. She received her BFA in Illustration at the University of the Arts and has expanded her practice into time based media through a robust independent study of game design and procedural animation. The digital worlds she creates are spaces for exploration and self reflection beyond a consumerist agenda, presenting a perspective of interconnectivity and challenging capitalistic ideas of personal worth and value. Her freelance design practice encompasses interactive media of all kinds including video games, museum exhibits, and virtual production. She has exhibited work locally in Philadelphia at Icebox and InLiquid as well as in Baltimore, Tallahassee, Rhode Island, and DC.

Addison Namnoum

is an artist, educator, and curator. She received her BA in Human Ecology at College of the Atlantic in 2014 and her MFA at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 2019. In her studio practice she works with landscape through experiences of the every-day, drawing on the languages of weather, waterways, and wind to reflect the sensorial and shifting world we inhabit.

Kimi Pryor

is a Los Angeles-born painter living and working in Germantown, Philadelphia. She received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and MFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, founded the Philadelphia-based studio visit blog phillypeer, moderates a Philly-based crit group, and has exhibited in New York and locally, with recent exhibitions including “The Buried Life”, a two-person show with Robert at Da Vinci Art Alliance’s Gallery 2, and “Inner Currents”, a two-person show with Matt Allyn Chapman at Curio Gallery & Creative Supply in Lancaster, PA. “I am interested in the imaginal, the inner, and the mysterious. My work explores how thought, the search for meaning, and creation/destruction cycles shape and form worlds over time.”

Whitson Ramsey

is a Mississippi-born painter and photographer. He received his BFA in Drawing and Painting from the University of Southern Mississippi. He is the co-founder and visual arts editor for Warm Milk Publishing, an artist-run poetry and art journal and zine publication started in 2020. His paintings and Polaroid photographs explore ideas of sentimentality and documenting memories through portraiture in a way that mimics his own journal entries. His work has been exhibited throughout the regional American South as well as in New York, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.

Lou Serna

is a Latinx/Native American curator and artist. He is a graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with a current curatorial practice focused on diverse voices and visions. He lives and works in South Philly.

Kate Testa

is a curator, educator and mixed media artist whose work explores themes of the metaphysical and the occult while investigating how the art making process can transcend into a spiritual practice. Her background is based in the crafts. She received her BFA from The Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2008 where she studied glass and then worked professionally in the glass industry for the next 8 years in Seattle, WA. In 2016 she relocated to pursue her master’s degree and received her MFA concentrating in sculpture from the University of Delaware in 2018. She was the 2018-19 Curatorial Fellow at The Delaware Contemporary and has taught at Delaware College of Art and Design in Wilmington, DE and West Chester University in West Chester, PA.
